Three Ways For Contact Lens Wearers To Protect Their Eyes

If you wear eye contacts, you need to take a few extra precautions when it comes to protecting your eyes. By adequately protecting your eyes, it will not only keep them healthy, it will ensure your contacts are always comfortable to wear. Here are three ways for contact lens wearers to protect their eyes.

Keep Things Clean

It's vitally important to always make sure your hands are clean before handling your eye contacts. This goes for all types of contacts including hard, disposable, and soft contact lenses. In washing your hands before putting in your contacts and taking them out, it lessens the chance of getting an eye infection. When it comes to cleaning your eye contacts, always use a disinfecting solution that is made specifically for contact lenses. Using water or saliva is never a good idea, as they can both contain microorganisms and bacteria that can lead to a serious eye infection.

Be Careful with Eye Makeup

Anyone who wears contacts should be careful with it. Not only can getting makeup on your contacts increase the chances for infection (especially when it comes to old makeup), it can also interfere with vision and make them feel uncomfortable. Some tips for contact lens and makeup wearers include:

  • Put in your eye contacts before applying makeup
  • Try to use non-allergenic makeup
  • Use cream eye shadow versus powder as it is less likely to get into your eyes

Because old makeup can increase the chance for infection, it should be replaced on a regular basis. It is recommended to replace eye makeup such as mascara and liquid eye liners every three months, cream eye shadows every six months, and powder eye shadows and pencil eyeliners every two years.

Invest In a Good Pair of Sunglasses

Whether you wear contact lenses or not, having a good pair of shades is vital for protecting the eyes. For the best protection against ultraviolet rays, the American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends finding sunglasses that block UV rays 100 percent. For those who wear eye contacts, sunglasses can also help protect the eyes from the wind. Not only can the wind cause the eyes to become dry more quickly, it can cause dust particles to get inside the eye which makes wearing contacts extremely uncomfortable.

By keeping things clean, being careful with eye makeup, and buying a good pair of sunglasses, you will be giving your eyes optimum protection while wearing contact lenses.
